Mary Horton was the fourth child of William Horton & Elizabeth Gamble born December 23rd,1879 at West Bromwich, Staffs.
In 1881 Mary was with her parents & older sister Emilia & older brother Harry at 240 St Pauls Rd, Harborne, Staffs.
Mary was still living at home, now 38 Hope St, West Bromwich, in 1891 with her parents & sister & brothers Harry & Oswald.
Mary was still living at Hope St in 1901 with her parents, her father having become the head master of an elementary school. Both Mary & her brother Oswald were pupil teachers.
By 1911 Mary was a certificated assistant school mistress & was living with her brother, Oswald, also an assistant school master, at 188 Beeches Rd, West Bromwich. They had a 24 year old domestic servant, Bertha May Watton.
The 1939 register shows that Mary was living at 9 Oxford Rd, West Bromwich. She was described as a school teacher (retired) & there was another retired school teacher, Margaret Johnstone, living with her. Interestingly 9 Oxford Rd was the home of her parents in 1914.
In 1952 Mary was the informant of her brother Oswald’s death & her address at this time was 8 Ernest Rd, Smethwick.
Mary died January 20th, 1981 at Fern Lodge, 36 South Rd, Smethwick, Warley. Her death certificate states that she was a retired school teacher. The informant of her death was niece Marjorie Emelia Groves (daughter of Mary’s sister Emelia Bessie Horton [h.1.7.2.2] & husband Benjamin Skidmore).
